Chlebny den'

Der Brottag
Directed by
1998

A small, partly abandoned village near Saint Petersburg. Only a few inhabitants still live here, mainly old people with their pets. Once a week, on Tuesday, it is bread day: a locomotive parks a wagon loaded with bread near the village, which the inhabitants push into the village on rails that are no longer in use.

The film portrays the life of a village in post-soviet Russia with all its poverty and the devastating legacy of the Stalinist heritage, especially for human relations. The viewer is confronted with a experience of life which can almost be called post human. The jury found that the film was very well made, that it showed moments of very creative and courageous camera work.
