The Norwegian film "Elskling" (Loveable) by Lilja Ingolfsdottir has won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury in Karlovy Vary 2024. The film also received the Special Prize of the Festival Jury, the Prize of the Europe Cinemas Label Jury and of the Fipresci Jury. The Crystal Globe, the festival's main prize, went to the British documentary film "A Sudden Glimpse to Deeper Things" by Maurice Cousins. The prize for Best Director went to Nelicia Low for her film "Cì xīn qiè gŭ" (Pierce, Singapore, Taiwan, Poland 2024).
Karlovy Vary 2024 was opened by Viggo Mortensen's "The Dead Don't Die". Mortensen who received the Festival President's Award at the opening ceremony, is not only director but also screenwriter, producer, composer and one of the leading actor's of the film. Other guests of honour of this year's festival were Steven Soderbergh, Clive Owen, and Daniel Brühl.
The festival comprises two competition sections, the Crystal Globe Competition with world or international premieres and the Proxima Competition for upcoming directors and innovative films. The retrospective was dedicated to Franz Kafka and shows adaptations of his works as well as films which bear witness to his aesthetic influence. A number of additional non-competitive sections - Special Screenings, Horizons, Imagina, Future Frames - tributes and retrospectives completed the festival programme.
