Sofia Sjö is a researcher and librarian at the Donner Institute for Religious and Cultural Studies and holds the title of Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Åbo Akademi. She has studied film for several years as a researcher in the field of religion, media and popular culture. She wrote her doctoral thesis on gender and the messiah myth in contemporary science fiction films and TV series. She has also gained experience as a lecturer for university courses on religion and film. She has been a volunteer film critic for the science fiction and fantasy website Enhörningen for many years and has also written film reviews for the church magazine Nyckeln for the last two years.

Following the promising nominations, the Oscar ceremony felt like a disappointment.
