Die schwarzweiße Milchkuh
Directed by
2004

The first film of a young director who is a student at Peking University, Yi zhi huà naeniu take us into a remote Chinese province, quite forgotten by current economic development. At his father’s death Jinsheng has to quit school to take care of his grandmother. He returns to his village to substitute for the teacher at the request of his uncle, who is the head of the village. But Yangjiagou is a poor region, and the officials have nothing to offer the young man as a salary than a milk cow and a school in ruins. But Jinsheng will nit be discouraged.

The Black and White Milk Cow is a courageous film, shot with a very low budget, minimalist, austere, without tricks and  against the mainstream. Beyond the most absolute destitution and the little things of daily life, it tells us how kindness, modesty, dignity and the awareness of the other allow us to fight despair. This different gaze allows us also to talk about our lives here as well as our commitments and responsibilities.
