The film concentrates on the turbulent relationship between Knut and Marie Hamsun in the years shortly before the -Second World War, and on Hamsun's activities during the German occupation of Norway. After the war he was taken to court on account of high treason for collaborating with the Nazis. He was put in a psychiatric clinic and finally sentenced to pay a huge fine which almost brought about his financial ruin. The film does not attempt to censure or to defend Hamsun's behaviour but rather to give "new Answers" to the question of how the ingenious writer could develop such an admiration for Hitler.
