29th International Film Festival Cannes

At the Festival de Cannes 1976 the Ecumenical Jury did not award a prize. Instead, the Jury published the following statement: "The Festival was marked by very serious films devoid of hope, some of which had a violence unknown so far. The Ecumenical Jury, aware that this violence and despair reflect the image of our society has decided not to award a prize this year and expresses the wish that cinema does not become a source of hatred in a world that aspires to peace. Nevertheless the Jury is not indifferent to the human qualities of certain films."
