Maren, a strong-willed young woman, is seen by the authorities as rude and promiscuous. Worried that her unruly behaviour will incite others, she is sent away to a women's institution on Sprogø.

Here she must learn to behave like a proper young woman. She will share a room with Sørine, who has already internalised the story about herself and has learned to behave properly. Sørine is supposed to help change her behaviour, but Maren's resistance to the system leads to terrible consequences for both of them. The film is inspired by real events from the women's institution at Sprogø in Denmark in the 1930s.
