The Ecumenical Jury in Warsaw 2022 awarded its Prize to the Polish-Ukrainian film "Tata" (Dad) by Anna Maliszewska. The Warsaw Grand Prix was awarded by the international festival jury to "Praznik rada" (May Labor Day) by Pjer Žalica (Bosnia and Hercegovina, Croatia, Northern Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro 2022), the Prize for Best Director to Viesturs Kairiss for "Janvaris" (January, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland 2022). The prize for the best Ukrainian feature film in the section "Odessa - Warsaw: Ukrainian Competition" was won by "Vachennya metelyka" (Butterfly Vision) by Maxim Nakonechny. The jury of international film critics (Fipresci) awarded "Māsas" (Sisters) by Linda Olte (Latvia, Italy 2022) as best debut from Eastern Europe.
The 38th Warsaw International Film Festival opened on 14 October with the costume drama Niebezpieczni dżentelmeni (Dangerous Men) by Maciej Kawalski, which gathers later celebrities such as Josef Conrad and Bronislaw Malinowski after a night of drinking in pre-war Poland in 1914. This year, the festival specially created a competition section with Ukrainian films that were otherwise scheduled for the Odessa International Film Festival - which could not take place because of the war Russia has already been waging against Ukraine for six months.
In addition to the 15 films in the international competition, from which the Ecumenical Jury chose its winner, the festival also screened films in the "Crème de la Crème", "1-2", "Free Spirit" and the documentary and short film competitions.
