The Ecumenical Jury at the International Film Festival for Children and Young Audience SCHLINGEL 2018 awarded its Prize to the animated film "The Breadwinner" by Nora Twomey from Ireland, and a Commendation to "Meerkat and Moonship" by Hanneke Schutte from South Africa which also won the SLM Top Award of the Professional Jury fo international feature films and the Prize of the International Association of Film Critics (Fipresci). The European Children's Jury choose the Indian film "Pahuna - The Litlle Visitors" by Paakhi A. Tyrewala as their winner. The Prize of the City of Chmenitz went to "The Falcons" by Braghi Thor Hinriksson from Iceland, and the Special Prize of the MDR, the public broadcasting station in Saxony, to the Czech-Slovakian coproduction "The Third Wish" by Vit Karas.

The International Film Festival for Children and Young Audience 2018 opened in the Opera House of Chemnitz on September 30. Ten juries awarded 18 prizes in six competition sections. The Ecumenical Jury chooses its winner among the feature films . A special programme was dedicated to Iceland.

The Ecumenical Jury awards its prize to a film whose content and aesthetics are thoroughly convincing. The movie is set in the year 2001 and depicts a family’s struggle for survival in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan from the perspective of an 11-year-old girl. The successful connection of real events and a timeless fairy tale makes this animated film appealing to both younger and grown-up audiences.
