Das Leben auf Erden
Réalisé par
1999

The Mauritanian-born director Abderrahmane Sissako travels from Paris to Mali to see his father's village at the turn of the millennium. He climbs on a bicycle, wanders through the streets, across the fields and squares of the village, and meets Nana, a young woman who, like him, is just visiting. Semi-documentary, semi-fictional, the film portrays the village life, whose everyday life is hardly touched by the millenium event, and reflects - formulated off screen and enriched by quotations from Aimé Césaire - the complicated relationship between Europe and Africa.
