Marie-Therese Mäder studied philosophy as well as film and religious studies at the University of Zurich after twenty years of professional engagement as an actress. She completed her doctorate in 2011 on the relationship between film and religion and was then a senior assistant at the Centre for Religion, Economics and Politics at the University of Zurich (UZH) for several years. In 2019, she habilitated at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich (LMU) on the representations of religious communities in the media and is a lecturer in media ethics at the Universities of Bern and Graubünden, in the field of religion and the public sphere at UZH and in religious studies and history at LMU. Her research has resulted in numerous publications. Most recently, she published the monograph " Mormon Lifestyles. Communicating Religion and Ethics in Documentary Media".

At the Oulu's Children's and Youth International Film Festival 2024 the Church Media Foundation presented its "Look at Me..." Award to Nellie Rajala for her film "The Elf Ring".
