From 1998 to 2007, INTERFILM, together with the Conference of European Churches (CEC) and on behalf of the John Templeton Foundation, awarded the European John Templeton Film Award. It was given to a film that had won either an ecumenical or INTERFILM prize in the previous year or had been honoured as FILM OF THE MONTH by the Protestant Film Jury in Germany or the Protestant and Catholic film commissioners in Switzerland. A three-member jury - Robin Gurney, press spokesman for the Conference of European Churches, Hans Hodel, jury coordinator and, from 2004, president of INTERFILM, and Karsten Visarius, head of the film and audiovisual media department at the Gemeinschaftwerk der Evangelischen Publizistik - chose the winner. The award ceremony took place during the Berlinale as part of a church service.
